Dear Teacher Sun, Below is my English explanation of 蘇 軾 的 "水 調 歌 頭": 明月幾時有 把酒問青天 "Since when has the bright moon been in existence?" With a cup of wine in my hand, I ask the blue sky. 不如天上宮闕 今夕是何年 I don't know in what year it is tonight in the Heavenly Palace, 我欲乘風歸去 又恐瓊樓玉宇, 高處不勝寒 I desire to ride the wind back home. Yet I fear that the crystal and jade mansions are much too high and cold for me. 起舞弄清影, 何似在人間 Dancing with my moon-lit shadow I wonder about the difference between dancing in the human world and dancing in the heavenly palace. 轉朱閣 低綺戶 照無眠 The moonlight revolves around the red pagoda and stoops to silk-pad doors, shining upon the insomniac 不應有恨 何事長向別時圓 If the moon is to bear no grudge, why does it tend to be its fullest when people are apart? 人有悲歡離合 月有陰晴圓缺 此事古難全 Men may have separation, reunion, sorrow, and delight; the moon may be full or crescent, bright or obscure. These imperfections have existed since the dawn of time. 但願人長久, 千里共嬋娟. May we all be blessed with longevity, that however far apart we may be, we will still be able to enjoy the beauty of the moon together. This song was based off a poem written by Su Shi (蘇軾; 1,063-1,101 AD). It was written during the autumn moon festival while he was sharing drinks with friends. Su shi had previously been sabotaged by his political rivals and had lost his official position in Imperial China. Because he could not be with his brother during this holiday, Su Shi decided to write this poem to express his feelings.
